Duration of Project End 2010 to End 2012
ABSTRACT
The objective of this project is to examine the
metal-oxide interface of a number of mod-
ern zirconium based claddings, irradiated in
Halden reactor up to high burn-ups, in order
to compare the oxidation behaviour of these
materials. The aim is to correlate the micro-
structure of each cladding material to its com-
position in view of better understanding the
role of alloy composition and microstructure
on its oxidation behaviour. Four different sam-
ples have been examined this year, from three
different alloy types. The results have shown
that two types of precipitates are present in
the alloys studied, depending on the Fe con-
tent of the material. In the case of alloys show-
ing a better resistance to oxidation, the Fe con-
taining precipitate is absent or its frequency is
statistically low. It has been observed that the
Fe containing precipitate undergoes a certain
amorphization, where as the other type of pre-
cipitate, a -Nb type, does not show this be-
haviour. All precipitates show certain dissolu-
tion under irradiation; this behaviour is inten-
sified in the oxide.
